Art Roundup – 2025

It’s time for the annual art roundup, a time where I share or reshare all the art I made in the past year (not including Draconis Wicked comics, you get those all the time). I’ve done an art roundup once before, so this is now a time-honored annual tradition.

Lepus Rabbits

I only made two Lepus Rabbits in 2025. Is that why so many people called this a cursed year? Oh, well, At least the ones I finished look good. In 2026, I plan to put the rabbits back on a schedule so I can make them more consistently.

Regrowth

Last spring, I made a short comic called “Regrowth” as a submission for a collaborative zine called Unfinished Business. It’s full of stories about how people deal with loss and the things that haunt them. Since Unfinished Business is still up for sale, I’m not going to repost the full comic here, but please consider getting yourself a copy. It’s a charity project that benefits the Brookline Teen Outreach Program.

Here are a few panels of my comic:

Super Smash Opera Presents Aria Kart

In 2025, I rejoined the SSO theater team to perform our original opera, Aria Kart in a new venue at VGMcon. The new stage layout called for some new animated backgrounds, this time positioned directly behind the actors. I’m not going to post everything (you’ll just have to come see us perform someday), but here’s a sample of an animated racetrack in imitation 3D. Just imagine the actors standing in front of it and pretending to drive little karts.

I made four moving racetracks and a bunch of static backgrounds for the moments between the action. Here are a few of the static scenes:

Super Mario Bros 45th Anniversary

We can never get enough Mario. To commemorate the 45th anniversary of the original Super Mario Bros. game, I redrew the original and iconic Japanese box art with the characters in their modern styles. I did change up some of the graphics and added in a lot of classic characters who didn’t quite fit the original box art’s format. I may have changed up the design a little, but the intention is still there.

Catober

I finally participated in another ‘tober event, specifically Catober, the art challenge where you draw a cat for every day of October. I think there were at least three separate Catobers this year, but I followed the Karen Luk version.

48 Hour Film Project

For the first time ever, I participated in the 48-Hour Film Project, an event that involves making a short film in 48 hours. The project leader, (my brother-in-law) wrote a story about a man with a dark past that somehow involved a classic 16-bit video game. So, I had to invent and animate a convincing 90’s style video game for segments to be mixed in with the live-action. (I have a suspicion that parts of this script were written with my specific skill-set in mind).

Here’s a brief excerpt of my animation:

Someday, I’ll share the full film if it’s ever made publicly available. You should watch it, it’s really pretty good.

24 Hour Comic Day 2025

For the third year in a row, I did a variation on 24-hour comic day (I write the script in advance, but all of the art is done in 24 hours). In 2025, I adapted the classic Japanese folk tale of The Rat’s Groom into a charming comic book.

Full Moon Art Challenge 2025

2025 meant another successful year of the Full Moon Art Challenge. The theme was Lunar Trees from the Celtic Tree Zodiac. My personal medium was cut paper.

And So it Continues…

So, those are my highlights for 2025. I’m hoping to keep making new and surprising stuff in 2026, so stay tuned.
